Best Day Trips from Fort Collins: Part Two

A favorite home base for many visitors, Fort Collins is one of the best cities to visit in Colorado because of its close proximity to other destinations. We covered a few of our favorite trips in our Best Day Trips From Fort Collins: Part One, and we’re back with three more great reasons to get out and explore Northern Colorado!

Loveland, CO (30 minute drive)

What makes it special

Loveland, Colorado, known as the “Sweetheart City,” is unique for its vibrant arts scene, highlighted by public sculptures, and its annual Valentine’s Day celebrations. Located near the Rocky Mountain foothills, it offers abundant outdoor activities and features a charming historic downtown with local shops and restaurants. Additionally, Loveland boasts a growing wine and craft beer culture!

Benson Sculpture Garden

Benson Sculpture Garden is a beautiful outdoor park showcasing an impressive collection of sculptures crafted by world-renowned artists. Set against a backdrop of lush landscaping and peaceful ponds, the garden features over 150 pieces of artwork that you can admire as you stroll through the garden.

Explore Old Town Loveland

Downtown Loveland is the vibrant heart of the city, brimming with historic buildings, cafes, craft breweries, local shops, and restaurants. It also serves as a center for community events and festivals all year-round. Loveland has some of the best thrifting— be sure to explore the secondhand shops and see what gems are waiting to be discovered!

Grab a local bite

Loveland is full of great restaurants, cafes, and bars! We recommend Door 222 for an inspired twist on traditional dishes. If you are looking to grab a drink, Henry’s Pub has classic & contemporary American cuisine. Loveland Ale Works is also a casual spot where you can sit back and enjoy a beer. If you are looking for a caffeine fix, Dark Heart Coffee and Feel Love Coffee are both great options. And for a delicious brunch, head over to Taste Local.

Snap a photo and add your lock to the Loveland Love Locks Sculpture. Lovers can lock their padlock on the back of the letters and throw away the key, a symbol of bonding their love forever. Celebrate your love by taking part in this Loveland tradition!

Sourced in California and crafted in Colorado, Sweet Heart Winery is the perfect destination to cozy up with a blanket while sampling a curated collection of wines. High Hops Brewery and The Heart Distillery, both located under the same roof, offer an ideal place to unwind with a drink. Owned by the same family in Windsor, High Hops offers over 40 beers on tap, while The Heart serves award winning gin, whiskey, vodka, and absinthe.

Windsor has a wonderful selection of dining options. For an exceptional fine dining experience, be sure to make reservations at Chimney Park, where you can enjoy a happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM. The Windsor Mill Tavern, situated in a garden-level basement from the 1900s, offers a delightful menu of modern bites and signature cocktails, making it perfect for a date night. Additionally, Pizza Vino, a local favorite originally from Fort Collins, invites you to enjoy a slice at its original Windsor location.

Explore Windsor’s Trails

Windsor is full of natural beauty waiting to be explored. The Windsor Lake Trail, a picturesque 2.25-mile loop, offers stunning views of the Rockies. Estes Park (1.25 hour drive)

What makes it special

Estes Park is the ideal basecamp for Rocky Mountain National Park. Renowned as a bucket-list destination, the Colorado Rockies offer breathtaking outdoor experiences, stunning vistas, and exciting wildlife sightings, earning it a place among the most visited national parks in the country. Located only 4 miles from the park’s main entrance, Estes Park is set against the beautiful landscape of the Rockies. The charming town has roaming wildlife, exceptional dining options, and picturesque views.

Estes Park Aerial Tramway

“Soar to the Summit” on the Estes Park Tram and enjoy sweeping views of the mountains and valley below. Enjoy a meal at the Hungry Chipmunk Café while taking in the breathtaking panoramas, get in a nice hike over to West Summit, try your luck at pinball, feed the cute chipmunks or just get some great photos!

Explore the Historic Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel is a grand and majestic building, established in 1909. Originally conceived as a luxury retreat, this establishment served as the inspiration for Stephen King’s renowned novel, “The Shining.” Featuring a preserved carriage house transformed into a fried chicken restaurant and an elegant whiskey bar, it is definitely worth a visit.

Walk around Downtown Estes Park

Visit the charming Downtown Estes Park and explore the local shops! Don’t miss the freshly made taffy from The Taffy Shop or Purple Mountain Taffy Company while you walk Elkhorn Avenue. This delightful treat pays homage to the region’s first settlers, making it a popular treat in Estes.

Located so close to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Estes Park area is a haven for wildlife. Make sure to be on the lookout for Elk and other wildlife that call this place home.

Drive to Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

This remarkable 55-mile route presents breathtaking views of the Continental Divide. Along the journey, you have the opportunity to explore the stunning Rocky Mountain National Park, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and the renowned Eldora Ski Resort.
